AI Is Not the Problem. Blind Trust Is
AI is quickly becoming part of everyday work. It helps us write faster, summarize complex information, generate ideas, analyze documents, and automate repetitive tasks. Used properly, it can be a powerful productivity tool.
But there is a growing problem: people are beginning to trust AI outputs without enough verification.
This is not just a theoretical risk. It has already happened in law, aviation, healthcare support, journalism, and customer service. In many of these cases, the AI did not fail in a dramatic way. It simply produced an answer that sounded convincing and a human accepted it.
That is the real danger.
In 2023, lawyers in the Mata v. Avianca case submitted legal documents containing fake case citations generated by ChatGPT. The citations looked real, but the cases did not exist. The court sanctioned the lawyers and their firm. The issue was not merely that AI hallucinated. In another case, Air Canada’s chatbot gave a customer incorrect information about bereavement fare refunds. The customer followed the chatbot’s advice, but Air Canada later tried to distance itself from the chatbot’s response. The risk becomes even more serious in sensitive areas. These examples all point to the same issue: AI output often has the appearance of confidence. It can sound polished, structured, and authoritative. But confidence is not the same as correctness.
This creates what I would call the confidence trap.
The confidence trap happens when humans assume that because an AI answer is well-written, it must be accurate. This is especially dangerous for busy professionals. When people are under pressure, they may use AI to save time. But if they skip review, fact-checking, and professional judgment, the time saved upfront can become a much bigger problem later.
The lesson is not that organizations should avoid AI. That would be unrealistic and, in many cases, unwise. The better lesson is that AI needs governance, human review, and clear boundaries.
Organizations should ask a few simple questions before using AI in any serious workflow:
Can this AI output affect a customer, patient, employee, investor, regulator, or court decision?
Does the output need factual accuracy?
Is there a human accountable for reviewing it?
Are users clearly informed when they are interacting with AI?
Is there a process to detect and correct mistakes?
AI should not be treated as an oracle. It should be treated as a junior assistant: useful, fast, sometimes impressive, but still requiring supervision.
The future will not belong to people who blindly trust AI, nor to people who reject it completely. It will belong to people and organizations that know how to use AI critically.
The real skill is not prompting. The real skill is judgment.
