Is “AI” Just the Latest Excuse for Companies to Grab More of Our Data?

Artificial intelligence is everywhere these days it’s in the headlines, in product launches, and in nearly every company’s mission statement. AI is sold as the key to smarter technology and a better world. But beneath the glossy marketing lies a deeper issue:

Are companies using AI as a cover to gather even more of our personal information?

The Endless Appetite for Data

Every AI system runs on data, massive amounts of it. The more data a company has, the better its algorithms can predict, recommend, or automate. That’s why tech firms are in a constant race to collect whatever they can: your clicks, your habits, your voice, your location and even your emotions.

Many now claim this data collection is simply to “improve AI performance.” It sounds harmless, even helpful. But that explanation often hides the truth that companies are building ever-larger data empires, not just to train AI, but to deepen their control over users and their markets.

When “Consent” Isn’t Really a Choice

Most of us agree to new terms of service without reading them. And even if we did, the fine print is so dense that few could truly understand what’s being taken or how it’s being used.
Companies often say they collect your data “to make the experience more personal” or “to help our AI learn.” In practice, that can mean constant monitoring your smart speaker listening for “training purposes,” or your app analyzing your behavior in the background.

The result is a kind of surveillance-by-design, where consent has become more about compliance than choice.

The Rise of “AI Washing”

There’s also a growing amount of what some call AI washing when companies invoke the word “AI” to justify almost anything.
A fitness app says it uses AI to coach you, but it really wants your biometric data.
A smart home device claims to use AI to “learn your routine,” but that also means tracking when you sleep, eat, and leave home.
Social networks say their AI “keeps communities safe,” while quietly optimizing ads based on every second of your attention.

Underneath it all, the AI label has become a convenient way to make intrusive data collection sound innovative even benevolent.

Regulation Struggling to Catch Up

Governments are trying to set limits, but the pace of AI development outstrips most regulatory efforts. Frameworks like the EU AI Act aim to set rules for how AI should be built and used responsibly. Yet, the real issue the hunger for data remains largely unregulated.
Companies claim user data is “anonymized,” but with enough cross-linked information, identities can often be reconstructed. In other words, the promise of privacy is thinner than it appears.

The False Comfort of Opting Out

Opting out sounds like freedom, but it’s not much of a choice when saying no means losing access to services you rely on. Most platforms are designed to make participation the path of least resistance and in many cases, the only realistic one.
This “take it or leave it” setup keeps users feeding data into the system whether they want to or not.

Building a More Honest AI Future

AI doesn’t have to be invasive. There are ways to design intelligent systems that protect privacy by using data minimization, federated learning, and synthetic data instead of personal information.
But these methods only gain traction when companies are willing to trade short-term data profits for long-term trust something that still feels rare.

A Question Worth Asking

AI itself isn’t the villain. It’s how companies use it or more precisely, what they use it to justify that should make us pause. If every new “AI feature” comes at the cost of more surveillance, we need to ask: who is this really for?

The next time you see a company say, “We’re collecting this data to make our AI better,” remember better for them doesn’t always mean better for you.
